Paint Palette Brewing and Kyoto NUDE Collaborate on New Release, "LAYERED MIRAGES"
Kobe-based Paint Palette Brewing has introduced its grape ale "LAYERED MIRAGES," a collaboration with Kyoto NUDE BREWERY. At 8.5% ABV, it layers wine yeast, grape skins, and herbs into a beer that explores the boundary between beer and wine.
Kobe City’s Chuo Ward-based Paint Palette Brewing has unveiled its new release, LAYERED MIRAGES. On the product page of its official website, it is introduced as a collaboration beer with Kyoto’s KYOTO NUDE BREWERY.
This beer is a grape ale. The malt is Pilsner, and the hops are Ekuanot and Nelson Sauvin. It also includes sugar, grape skins, koji, sage, jasmine tea, and tarragon, and is fermented with wine yeast. The specs are IBU 20, ABV 8.5%. The canned beer’s best-before date is listed as late August 2026.
The concept is "overlapping, shimmering." Against the backdrop of Kobe, where Western-style cuisine is deeply rooted and wine is familiar, the brewery aimed for a drink that feels like natural wine while still retaining beer-like character. By combining grape skins and hop-derived components, wine yeast, and three herbs without using grape juice, it achieves a tropical aroma reminiscent of passion fruit along with a dry yet pleasantly rounded mouthfeel.
According to the brewery’s explanation, the recipe was designed to pursue a hybrid direction between beer and wine, with attention also paid to thiols, which are key to the aroma. Poured into a glass, it releases layered aromas, and the herbal outline remains within the brightness. It is a new release that also aligns with Paint Palette Brewing’s stated aim of "painting diverse scenes," and seems to express the brewery’s worldview well.
On its website, the brewery describes beer as a "scene," using the image of vivid paints blending together as they are laid onto a white canvas. This collaboration can also be enjoyed as an expression of that philosophy, translated into beer design.
