Magma Brewing

Doesn't the name Magma Brewing sound cool and very Kagoshima? It's named that way because this is a rare place in the world where the active volcano Sakurajima and the city coexist.

It's on the first floor of LaPlus, a community exchange facility in front of Taniyama Station. What's unique is that it's operated by the social welfare corporation Keiseikai, so it also connects to employment support for people with disabilities. It's a brewery where beer making is tied to local welfare.

The brewer, Masato Ito, has an interesting background too. After training at Iwami Beer in Shimane, he launched Tanegashima Brewery in Tanegashima in 2017. From there, he moved his base to Taniyama in Kagoshima City and started Magma.

The regular lineup includes the golden ale Royal Garden, the wheat beer Royal Wheat, and the dark beer Royal Stout. They also have Drift Daidai, an IPA made with Hezuka daidai from the Osumi Peninsula. Hezuka daidai is a rare citrus with a fresh lime-like aroma.

Passion Ale Saison is a tropical saison made with passion fruit from the Osumi Peninsula, and it's a light, easy-drinking beer at 4.8% ABV and 15 IBU. It won bronze at the JAPAN GREAT BEER AWARDS 2025, and Ginger & Mulberry, a beer brewed with ginger and mulberry, won silver.

MAGMA BREWING WHEAT has a refreshing coriander-derived aroma and a soft mouthfeel, making it easy to drink at 4.5% ABV. You can enjoy it with Spanish food at the adjoining bar called Yokabito.
