Aoshima in Miyazaki is one of Japan's top surf spots. There's a brewery there that was founded with the help of a former pro surfer.

What, a surfer is making beer?!

More precisely, it was founded by three co-founders. Representative Atsuyoshi I., who was born in Aoshima, runs the seaside inn "Misakisou" and a cafe. Director Toru Nagano is a former pro surfer with experience as an ASP judge, and he also holds sommelier and oyster master qualifications. He moved from Osaka to Miyazaki at age 20 and now runs a surf shop and an oyster restaurant.

A pro surfer, a sommelier, and an oyster master?! What kind of career is that!

And the CDO, Takuya Umehara, is originally from Otaru, Hokkaido. After graduating from Tokyo University of Agriculture, he worked as a mobile phone development programmer at Panasonic, then founded a web production company at 25. After that, he moved from Tokyo to Miyazaki.

An inn owner, a former pro surfer, and an IT entrepreneur... what an amazing combination. Why beer?
Hop Bro
The starting point was the realization that even though they were holding a beer festival, there was no beer here in Aoshima. They built the brewing facility inside Misakisou over 18 months. The flagship, "Aoshima Surf Ale," is a fruity beer made with Nijo lemons from Miyazaki plus refreshing hops and New Zealand hops, at 4% alcohol.
Mugi
That's exactly the kind of beer I'd want to drink after surfing and getting out of the sea!
Hop Bro
That's exactly the concept. They also make "Aoshima Turf Ale," an English-style EPA using herbal hops, and "Jidori Ale," a specialty beer developed solely to make Miyazaki jidori chicken even more delicious. "Aoshima Botanical Ale" has a botanical aroma like gin, and they created it in collaboration with three yakitori shops in town.
Mugi
Beer for jidori chicken and a beer made specifically for yakitori? I love the pairing-first idea!
Hop Bro
They promote "local first" and "local respect," setting prices with local customers in mind and developing original beer for Miyazaki Car Ferry. Their activities are thoroughly rooted in Aoshima and Miyazaki.
Mugi
It has the sea, beer, and love for Miyazaki all in one... I want to go to Aoshima and drink Surf Ale!
