Did you know there are hardly any breweries in Japan that brew beer in a hotel basement?

Beer in a hotel? So they don't just serve it in the restaurant, they actually make it there?
Hop Bro
Exactly. On the first basement floor of Hotel Okura Fukuoka, there's Okura Brewery, and it has kept brewing its own beer since the hotel opened in 1999. It's inside Hakata Riverain, right next to Hakataza, and it's directly connected to Nakasu-Kawabata Station, so access is excellent.

They've been making it for over a quarter of a century! What kinds of beer do they have?
Hop Bro
There are four regular beers. First is "Als," a Kölsch with a fruity aroma reminiscent of Chardonnay and a crisp bitterness. "Schon Alt" is an Altbier with the sweetness of caramel malt balanced by firm hop bitterness. Schon Alt won gold at the Japan Asia Beer Cup 2011.
Mugi
Kölsch and Altbier, so they really specialize in German-style beers.
Hop Bro
The standout is a stout called "DAIKOKU." It takes its name from the Daikoku float in the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. It has coffee-like bitter aromatics and a sweet mouthfeel, and at 6% ABV it's a little stronger. It won gold at the International Beer Competition 2012.

A stout named after a Hakata festival! And it won gold too!
Hop Bro
The ingredients are malt imported directly from Germany, along with aroma hops from Hallertau and Saaz hops. It takes about five days for primary fermentation, then about a month of secondary fermentation and maturation at low temperature to finish. The brewery's dedicated brewers make it fresh every day.

What kind of atmosphere would it be to drink craft beer inside a hotel?
Hop Bro
There's counter seating where you can drink while watching the brewing tanks. The food is serious too, with Milan-style pizza made from dough fermented with beer yeast and sausages from Itoshima. And if you're a One Harmony member, there's a subscription that lets you drink one pint every day for 2,500 yen a month. Since a regular pint is 1,200 yen, it's a great deal.

A pint every day!? Craft beer after a show at Hakataza sounds amazing! I want to go!
