Near Ohori Park there’s a brewpub called B.R.E.W., and the owner-brewer, Wataru Fujita, has a pretty interesting background.
Mugi
What kind of person is he?
Hop Bro
He’s from Sapporo and used to work at restaurants affiliated with Sapporo Beer. After working in a few food-service jobs, he moved to Fukuoka in 2020. Then he trained at a brewery in Hokkaido and launched his own brewpub.
Mugi
So he switched from the world of major beer to craft beer!
Hop Bro
Exactly. They have a 200-liter brewhouse and six fermentation and storage tanks, and they always offer 10 original beers. On top of that, they brew a new beer every week, so you can find something different every time you visit.
Mugi
Every week!? That pace is incredible, isn’t it?
Hop Bro
It really is. The lineup is distinctive too, with beers like the Hazy IPA "Midnight dB," the coffee porter "Brewed Buzz," and the red ale "NYC Gardai." The naming sense is pretty unique, right?
Mugi
I’m curious about the coffee porter! The name is cool too.
Hop Bro
They also use a wide range of ingredients, combining German and British malts with hops from the U.S., Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. The brewing water is from Fukuoka. The range is huge, from the light-bodied Micro IPA to the rich DDH Hazy IPA.

What’s the atmosphere like? Beer bars can feel a little intimidating...
Hop Bro
That’s one of the best things about B.R.E.W.: pets are welcome, and it’s also family-friendly. You can see the brewing equipment from the counter, so even craft beer beginners can drop in easily. Fujita himself says he wants it to be a place rooted in the local community, not just a spot for beer obsessives.
Mugi
A brewpub that allows pets is rare! I’d love to stop by after a walk around Ohori Park.
