Beer Base Campanella in Higashimatsushima, officially called "Earth and Sea Campanella Brewing." This beer was born from post-disaster reconstruction.

From reconstruction? What do you mean?

The representative, Naoya Otani, is originally from Kanagawa and used to work at Asahi Soft Drinks. He came to Higashimatsushima in 2019 through a reconstruction agency dispatch program, and got involved with the "Kibou no Oobamugi Project" there. It is an initiative to grow barley on land left damaged by the tsunami, and he fell in love with it so deeply that he moved there and quit his corporate job.

He quit a major beverage company and moved to Higashimatsushima... that's an incredible level of commitment.

"Kibou no Oobamugi," or the Hope Barley Project, started in 2013. It revived farmland affected by salt damage from the tsunami by planting resilient two-row barley. It now yields more than 50 tons a year. Campanella's concept is to brew beer using 100% of that malt.

Beer made from barley grown on salt-damaged land! The story starts with the ingredients themselves.

The main label is "Higashimatsushima Dortmunder / Demeter," the flagship brewed with 100% Hope Barley malt. Other beers include "Yamoto Pale Ale / Athena," blended with local rice, and "Nobiru Weiss / Hera," made with wheat and barley.

They have names from Greek mythology?

Yes, the brand concept is "the Twelve Olympian Gods." From sourcing ingredients to brewing, everything is completed within Higashimatsushima City, in partnership with local agricultural corporations such as "Megui-to" and "Agreed Naruse." It's the ultimate form of local production for local consumption.

There are beers sold only within the city too, right? The ones you can only drink if you go there.

hop happyHop Bro

Exactly, two of the labels are sold only in Higashimatsushima City. The brewery also has an attached dining space called "Beer Base Campanella," so you can drink freshly brewed beer on the hill in Nobirugaoka. Drinking beer while looking out over barley fields in a new town built on former disaster land is an experience you definitely can't get anywhere else.

Barley from a disaster site turned into beer, and you can drink it there on the spot... I have to go.
