A collaboration rooted in craft culture

COEDO Brewery, based in Higashimatsuyama, Saitama, has featured its collaboration beer with SUWADA, the long-established manufacturer from Tsubame-Sanjo: SUWADA HOUSE ALE. In the article, brewer Meguro explains how the limited beer came together and what went into shaping it as a Pear Saison.

The project is tied to the local custom of "agari-zake", a drink shared after a day’s work in the artisan communities of Tsubame-Sanjo. The beer is presented as a modern anniversary ale that reflects that ritual of closing out the day, exchanging a few words, and gathering energy for tomorrow.

Built as a Pear Saison

The beer style is Pear Saison. Saison originated in Belgium and is known for yeast-driven spice, fruity aromas, and a dry, refreshing finish. Here, that framework is paired with Le Lectier pears from Sanjo City, adding a soft fruit character to the style’s bright, crisp profile.

The ingredients are malt, pear, and hops. Excluding the sour malt used for pH adjustment, all malt came from Belgium, a deliberate choice that matches the beer’s Belgian roots. Meguro notes that fruit beers are always challenging because the brewer has to find the right balance between the fruit’s character and the base beer. In this case, the saison yeast and the pear worked well together, resulting in a beer he felt satisfied with.

How it is meant to be enjoyed

The beer is 4.5% ABV. The article recommends it as a relaxed drink after work, and also as an aperitif paired with simple snacks or small bites. That positioning makes the beer feel approachable rather than ceremonial, which fits the idea of a drink that belongs in everyday life.

The label design is also highlighted for its sense of functional beauty, echoing SUWADA’s products. SUWADA HOUSE ALE brings together a regional manufacturing culture and COEDO’s brewing approach in a way that feels grounded in place, ingredients, and timing rather than trend-driven novelty.
