Dark in Appearance, Light on the Palate

Kagiya Brewery's new release, "Paint it Black," is a BLACK IPA that incorporates blueberry elements. The brewery says it aimed for a dry, brisk finish that differs from the impression given by its deep black color, layering in the toasty character of roasted malt, the vivid aroma of citrusy hops, and a berry-like fruitiness.

The brewery is based in Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa, and primarily develops craft beer in the Kawasaki area. With this new release as well, it adds its own individuality through fruit-derived nuances while preserving the classic appeal of the style.

According to the brewer's notes, the base uses Carafa Special to provide a smooth roasted character. Blueberry is then added as a secondary ingredient, layering in berry notes derived from Mosaic hops and dark-fruit nuances from Belgian yeast. The hop bill centers on Columbus, combined with Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic.

Drinking Suggestion

The recommendation is to drink it slowly after the temperature has risen a little. As it warms, the berry, roast, and hop impressions emerge in sequence, making the layers of aroma easier to appreciate. For IPA fans, it could also be an interesting choice after a meal or as the third beer of the evening.

The title "Paint it Black" comes from the Rolling Stones song. Kagiya Brewery positions this beer as a glass that rewrites fixed ideas about black beer and IPA.
