Uchu Brewing is a brewery based in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, that develops beers with a space theme. At its directly operated shop on the 2nd floor of Glass Rock in Toranomon Hills, it offers a lineup of distinctive beers ranging from IPAs to smoothie-style releases.
What was announced at the Toranomon Hills taproom this time was the latest entry in the barrel-aged series, “Labyrinth #002.” According to the product information, the style is Black Barleywine, the batch No. is BA003, the ABV is 13%, and it is being released in 375 ml bottles.
The brewers’ notes say that barrels aged for more than two years in Heaven Hill Bourbon and Jim Beam Double Oak Bourbon casks were blended to create a complex, rich flavor. The aroma description mentions dark caramel along with fruity notes reminiscent of plum and raisin, making this a bottle that suggests both the thickness typical of barleywine and the depth brought by barrel aging.
The Toranomon Hills store information introduces Uchu Brewing as “a craft brewery brewing space-themed beer in the beautiful nature of Yatsugatake.” Linking its Yamanashi home base with its permanent Tokyo location, being able to enjoy the beer in-store while following the movement of limited bottles is part of this brewery’s unique appeal.
