Tsukuba Brewery’s "Koganehime IPA" Reports Tsukuba Collection Certification
Tsukuba Brewery’s Tsukuba Mountain Foothills Brewery announced on March 21 that its flagship brand, "Koganehime IPA," had been selected for "Tsukuba Collection," Tsukuba City’s certification program. By brewing with water from the foothills of Mt. Tsukuba and layering in a local story, the beer has been officially recognized as a "Tsukuba souvenir."
Tsukuba Brewery (Tsukuba, Ibaraki) announced on Instagram that its Koganehime IPA had been certified for "Tsukuba Collection." The post also reported that the brewery attended the certification ceremony as a certified business for fiscal 2025.
Tsukuba Collection is a system under which Tsukuba City certifies outstanding products from among goods produced in the city. According to the explanation in the post, 14 new products were certified for fiscal 2025, bringing the total number of certified items to 46. Koganehime IPA was positioned within this local selection framework as one of the "souvenir items representing Tsukuba."
What stood out in this announcement was that it did not stop at reporting an award for the beer alone; instead, it connected the beer to its regional context. The post referred to brewing in a place symbolic of Mt. Tsukuba and to inspiration from the legend of "Koganehime," making the link between the brand name and the local identity even clearer.
On its official website, Tsukuba Brewery presents itself as a "craft beer brewery from Tsukuba," and in addition to its base in front of Doho Park, it also offers canned sales and taps at the Tsukuba Mountain Foothills Brewery. Hours vary by season. With the city’s certification, travelers now have an even clearer reason to drink it on site, and for local fans it is likely to be news that reaffirms the value of a staple label.
As evaluation standards for craft beer expand beyond flavor to include the relationship with place, Koganehime IPA may further strengthen its position as "the first beer to drink when you come to Tsukuba."
