Brew Lab Kurayoshi has shared an Instagram post titled “A Distant Neighborhood…,” referring to Jiro Taniguchi’s celebrated work A Distant Neighborhood. Set in Kurayoshi, the story follows a man who returns to his hometown and finds himself confronting memories of family, adolescence, and the choices he has made.

One of the places that evokes the atmosphere of the work is the historic Shirokabe Storehouses district, where Brew Lab Kurayoshi is located. The brewery stands near the center of this preserved district, known for its white-plastered storehouses and traditional streetscape. It is a fitting setting for a brewery whose identity brings together heritage and contemporary craft.

Kurayoshi Beer, the company behind Brew Lab Kurayoshi, says its beer business was inspired by the achievements of Chozo Isono, Kurayoshi’s first honorary citizen and a figure connected to the founding of Kirin Beer. Its concept is “tradition × new,” with an aim to create beer that remains connected to the community.

The brewery’s beers include Nashi Brew, an ale made with juice from Tottori’s Oshu pear; Fresh Hop, brewed with fresh hops grown in the brewery’s own field; and UME BREW, made with Nohana plums from Yurihama. Its regular range also includes IPA, Golden Ale, Pale Ale, and stout.

Brew Lab Kurayoshi also works on local circulation by providing spent malt to farmers as feed for free-range chickens and using the resulting eggs in its restaurant dishes. For visitors exploring the Kurayoshi associated with A Distant Neighborhood, a stop at Brew Lab offers a taste of the town as it is today—historic in character, but still creating something new.
