Baeren Brewery Releases New Kölsch-Style Beer 'Colonia'
Baeren Brewery has released a new product, 'Colonia,' inspired by the beer style 'Kölsch' that originated in Cologne, Germany. It has the bright aroma and easy-drinking character associated with top fermentation, and the product name also reflects respect for tradition.
Iwate's Baeren Brewery has launched its new beer, Colonia. In an Instagram post, it is introduced as a beer inspired by the Cologne-born style known as 'Kölsch,' and for beer lovers, that origin alone makes it worth a closer look.
This style is one of the very rare beer types whose place of origin is legally protected around the world. That protection does not apply in Japan, but Baeren Brewery says it chose the name 'Colonia,' the old name for Cologne, out of respect for the rules and tradition. What stands out is that the name is not just a playful reference, but one that carries genuine respect for the style.
Its flavor is described as having the bright aroma from top-fermenting yeast and a smooth, light body that goes down easily. It has plenty of character, yet it is not tiring to drink. That balance captures what makes Kölsch so distinctive. The post also mentions the custom in Cologne of enjoying several servings in a special 200 ml glass, and explains that placing the coaster on top of the glass is a sign that no more refills are wanted. The comparison to wanko soba is a vivid way to convey the difference in beer culture.
Baeren Brewery has built its brand around classic European-style beer brewing, and this new release fits naturally into that line. The ingredients are malt (foreign-produced) and hops, and the alcohol content is 5.0%. The suggested retail price is 452 yen (tax included), and main sales channels include the Kitayama factory direct shop, the Baeren web shop, company-owned restaurants, supermarkets in the prefecture, liquor stores, department stores, and antenna shops.
Easy to drink, yet backed by a strong cultural story, Colonia seems like a new release that neatly reflects what Baeren Brewery does best.
