A rye-driven new release

Flora Fermentation, the Higashiomi, Shiga brewery built around the idea that agriculture and fermentation belong together, has released Roggenhund. According to the official product page, it is a 350 ml can of Rye IPA with 7.0% ABV and 32 IBU. The listed price is JPY 748.

The beer’s defining ingredient is home-grown rye. Flora Fermentation describes the flavor as a light, easy-drinking rye IPA with a subtle sweetness from its own rye crop, layered with hop-driven aromas that suggest papaya, melon, and pine. That combination gives the beer a grain-forward character without losing the aromatic lift expected from an IPA.

The name Roggenhund comes from a German folk figure: a dog spirit said to live in rye fields and appear in rituals meant to pray for a good harvest. Flora Fermentation uses that motif as a way to frame the beer’s personality, linking the image of a rye field in motion with the beer’s own sense of openness and flow.

The recipe is built on Barke Munich Malt, Pale Ale Malt, and Special B, with hops including McKenzie, Cascade (US), Cascade Deep Cut CGX NUVO, Chinook, Cascade (Hokkaido), and Super Pride. The batch number is 97.

Flora Fermentation is based in Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture, and its brewery mission emphasizes the connection between farming and brewing. Roggenhund fits neatly into that approach: a release that starts with what is grown locally and turns it into a hop-leaning beer with a clear rye expression.
