Great Dane Brewing holds purification rite for garden terrace in Akiu
Great Dane Brewing in Akiu, Sendai, welcomed a priest from Akiu Shrine for a purification rite ahead of the opening of its garden terrace. The ceremony covered both the terrace and the brewery, signaling final preparations for the outdoor space.
Great Dane Brewing held a purification rite with Sugawara, the chief priest of Akiu Shrine, before the opening of its garden terrace. The brewery is based in Akiu, Taihaku Ward, Sendai, Miyagi. Founded in Wisconsin in 1994, it opened a new brewery in Akiu in January 2024.
At the adjoining restaurant, guests can enjoy freshly brewed beer from as many as 16 taps, paired with dishes that make use of Miyagi ingredients. The company describes the terrace in front of the restaurant as a place to enjoy the sun and breeze of Akiu with a beer in hand.
Great Dane Brewing also welcomes families and dogs, so the outdoor area is part of a broader hospitality concept rather than a standalone addition. The purification rite suggests the terrace is moving into full use, adding another way to experience the brewery’s mix of local landscape and American brewing roots.
