The beer pub Highbury -The Cave of Beer- in Hanasakicho, Naka Ward, Yokohama, announced on Instagram that it will host 'KÖLSCH vs ALT~JAPANESE RHINELAND DERBY~.' According to the post, starting today, it will run a two-day tasting event centered on Kölsch from Cologne and Alt from Düsseldorf.
Day one is a must for Alt fans. The taps open with Alt from Swan Lake and Yokohama Brewery, and from there the focus will be on the following four beers:
- Album (four-brewery collaboration Alt @ Swan Lake)
- Yokohama Brewery Alt
- Kamakura Beer Alt
- Shonan Beer Alt
According to the post, only two kegs will be on offer at a time. In other words, even within the same Alt style, drinkers can keep going while switching among different labels, making it easy to compare the character of each brewery. As the event's 'delicious support squad,' Kato, Ida, and Nogaki from Yokohama Brewery are scheduled to visit on May 16 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. In addition, Kamakura Beer brewmaster Sawada and Shonan Beer brewmaster Tsutsui are also expected to appear from around 7:30 p.m.
As the name suggests, the appeal of this place is that, true to its 'CAVE' identity, it seems well suited for taking time to savor beer. For anyone in the Yokohama and Sakuragicho area who wants to sample local brewery Alts all in one place, this looks like a destination event. The following day is also set up so guests can enjoy Kölsch on the HOME side, making it an experience that can be enjoyed by moving between the two venues and comparing the beers.
