Nara Brewing Releases Amaro-Inspired Beer “MACGUFFIN”
Nara Brewing has announced the first shipment locations for “MACGUFFIN,” a beer inspired by the Italian herbal liqueur amaro. The beer combines angelica, orange peel, coriander, cardamom and other botanicals with fresh beetroot, creating citrus and spice aromas, earthy notes and a lingering herbal bitterness.

Nara Brewing has announced the first shipment locations for its new beer, “MACGUFFIN.”
Inspired by the Italian herbal liqueur amaro, MACGUFFIN blends botanicals and spices including angelica, orange peel, coriander and cardamom. Fresh beetroot is also added to contribute earthy character and color.
The brewery describes the beer as having citrus and spice aromas, followed by a long herbal bitterness after each sip. Rather than simply reproducing the flavor of a conventional beer, MACGUFFIN appears designed to capture the complex, bitter and botanical impression associated with amaro in a beer format.
The first shipments include both draft and canned versions. Draft locations include Himalaya Table, Beer Cafe Mankann, Gremlin and sabo in Tokyo; Sakura Taps in Yokohama; Tir na nÓg in Hamamatsu; Bungalow and DIG THE LINE in Kyoto; Teppan Kushiyaki Kussuke in Takatsuki; New Beijing Tei in Fukushima; and Shushi Hana and KISSA in Nara Prefecture.
Cans are being distributed through bottle shops and department stores including Caliquors Tokyo, TWO KINGS, Isetan Shinjuku, Sakasho Yamada at Keio Department Store Shinjuku, Kempa, TAKAMURA Wine & Coffee Roasters and the Hanshin Umeda department store. The restaurant knot in Toyota is also among the first shipment locations. Availability and tapping dates may vary by venue, so customers are advised to check directly with each store.
Founded in 2017, Nara Brewing is based in Nara City and aims to explore the breadth of beer through a wide range of styles and ingredients. MACGUFFIN’s interpretation of amaro through beer reflects that approach, pairing familiar brewing with a distinctly botanical flavor profile.
