A new beer featuring Nanko plums

Nanki-Shirahama Nagisa Beer has announced via its official Instagram account that “Ume Ale,” made with Nanko plums from Wakayama Prefecture, is complete. The post introduces the beer’s name and highlights its use of Nanko plums, one of the region’s best-known agricultural products.

Nanko plums are a signature variety from Kishu, an area widely associated with plum production. Their fruit-forward aroma and acidity may add a distinctive character to the malt- and hop-based beer. The Instagram post does not specify the alcohol content, bottle size, price, release date, or sales channels. Further details will need to be confirmed through future announcements from the brewery.

A Shirahama brewery shaped by local water

Based in Shirahama, Nishimuro District, Wakayama, Nanki-Shirahama Nagisa Beer produces and sells craft beer. According to the brewery’s official website, its beers are brewed with Tonda no Mizu, a local water source near the Tonda-zaka route of the Kumano Kodo. Its lineup includes Pale Ale, American Wheat, IPA, and Mandarin Orange Ale.

The brewery has been brewing in Nanki-Shirahama since 1997 and has developed beers using ingredients associated with Wakayama. Following its Mandarin Orange Ale, the new Ume Ale appears to be another attempt to connect local fruit with the character of Shirahama craft beer.

Nagisa Beer also describes its products as unpasteurized, unfiltered “raw” craft beer and recommends refrigerated storage. Beer fans will be watching for additional information about Ume Ale’s flavor profile, availability, and official launch.
