Better life with upcycle releases Oriental Citrus Ale with Shonan Gold
Ebina-based Better life with upcycle has released a new beer, Oriental Citrus Ale, brewed with Shonan Gold from Odawara. The beer uses off-grade fruit, plus peel and green Sichuan pepper, to build a bright citrus profile.
Better life with upcycle is a brewery-and-bakery brand based in Ebina, Kanagawa. Backed by a bakery founded in 1923, the project continues to give new value to food byproducts such as bread crusts and other forms of food loss.
Its latest release, Oriental Citrus Ale, is built around Shonan Gold from Odawara. The brewery says it used off-grade fruit produced by the Senior Network Odawara & Ashigara group, turning fruit that would not enter the market for visual reasons into a beer that still carries its aroma and flavor.
The base style is Kölsch, a German beer known for a light body and a clean finish. To support the citrus character, the recipe uses Mittelfrüh and Select hops for a gentle, elegant aroma. The brewery also includes not only the fruit but the peel, deepening the citrus fragrance. Green Sichuan pepper adds a fresh, lightly cooling accent, creating a finish that matches the beer’s “Oriental” name.
When poured, the beer opens with a vivid, fresh citrus aroma, then moves into a lingering peppery aftertaste as you drink. It is positioned as a beer for humid evening hours or for slow meals at the table. In one bottle, Better life with upcycle ties together local fruit, upcycling, and a thoughtful drinking experience that reflects the brewery’s roots in Ebina and its long-standing craft background.
