What kind of brewery is Dazaifu Brewery?

Did you know there's a craft brewery on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine? It's called Dazaifu Brewery, and it's the first brewery in the Chikushi area.

What, a brewery on that approach path!? I only ever associated it with charms and umegae mochi!

hop excitedHop Bro

Exactly. And the interesting part is how they weave Dazaifu's culture into the beer. They make a plum-themed wheat ale called "Tenjin UME Ale" that has a smooth wheat body with a gentle plum aroma on top. It's light at 4% ABV.

A plum beer! So Dazaifu! Has it been recognized?

It won silver in back-to-back years at the Japan Great Beer Awards in 2024 and 2025. Their "Tenjin IPA" uses plenty of Citra and Mosaic hops, giving it a strong citrus aroma and a serious, authentic profile. The malt combines British and Canadian malt, and the hops blend American and Czech varieties.

Oh! Do they have any other beers?

Their regular lineup centers on these three pillars, including a standard pale ale called "Tenjin Daikichi Ale" that balances malty richness with citrus hops. They also make a seasonal "SAKEKASU PALE ALE," which is interesting: it uses sake lees from a brewery with a 300-year history, known for its flower yeast, as a secondary ingredient.

mugi surprisedMugi

Sake lees!? Does that even work in beer?

hop excitedHop Bro

It does. It adds a fresh fragrance reminiscent of ginjo aroma, and the bitterness is kept modest. It ends up being a flavor that even sake fans can get into. A collaboration with a local sake brewery really suits this area.

Nice. What does the place feel like?

It's a Japanese-Western fusion design combining straight-grain wood, tile, straw-infused plaster walls, and iron. The exterior blends into the shrine approach while still standing out. Large glass windows let you see the brewing tanks, so you can drink while feeling close to the production process. The bottle labels were also designed by local illustrator Taku Bannai, and they're packed with Dazaifu character.

Fresh craft beer after a shrine visit... I definitely want to go!
