Yamamotoya in Kinosaki Onsen started its local beer business in 1997, and at the same time opened the beer restaurant Gubigabu. It is brewed with Tajima water as the brewing water, using 100% malt, unfiltered, and non-heat-treated.

What kinds of beer do they have?

There are four types, and all of them have German names, which is pretty stylish. "Sky Beer" Bier des Himmels is a pilsner and a classic lager that uses plenty of Czech Saaz hops. It is known for its fine foam and crisp finish.

German names are so stylish!

"Black Beer" Bier des Meeres is a stout with 5.5% alcohol. The bitterness of roasted malt and the sweetness of caramel give it a coffee-like depth. "River Beer" Bier des Flusses is a Weizen, with fruity wheat character and a refreshing taste.

Sky, black, river... what's the last one?

"Snow Beer" Bier des Schnee. It is also known as Crab Beer. With 6% alcohol, it was developed to pair with Matsuba crab. The malt sweetness and hop sharpness are designed to enhance the crab's flavor without overpowering it.

A beer developed to go with crab!? That is so Kinosaki!

Gubigabu moved to the middle of the hot spring district in 2013 and is now a restaurant in a traditional Kinosaki townhouse. It is a place you can drop by between visits to the public baths, and you can also compare all four beers.

Soak in the hot springs, eat crab, drink crab beer... Kinosaki in winter is absolutely a place I have to visit!
