Ikari Brewing is an authentic British ale brewery run by Garth Roberts, who is from the UK. It’s just a 1-minute walk from Ebara-Nakanobu Station.
Mugi
What, a British person is brewing beer in downtown Tokyo?
Hop Bro
Garth had been helping his uncle brew beer since childhood, so the aromas of hops and malt were always close to him. In 1998, he and his friends opened an English pub called "Meguro Tavern" on Meguro-dori, and in 2014 he started a brewery called "MT Craft Brewery" in Nakanobu.
Mugi
So he ran both a pub and a brewery?
Hop Bro
Yes. But COVID sharply reduced Meguro Tavern’s sales, and he had no choice but to close it in August 2020. From there, he changed the workshop’s trade name to "Ikari Brewing" and pivoted to takeout sales and standing-drink service.
Mugi
Even after losing the pub, he never stopped brewing...
Hop Bro
And the beer lineup is impressively serious: "Cascade" is an IPA with citrus aroma and a crisp finish. "Columbus" is a deeply flavored IPA popular in the UK. "Proper Gold" is a balanced pale ale. "Red Abbot" is a pale ale made with coriander.
Mugi
A pale ale with coriander! So there’s a bit of Belgian-style playfulness too.

They pour two taps a day from a lineup of seven total, and the pricing is great too: 500 yen for a glass, 1,000 yen for a liter. You drink in the standing area in a corner of the workshop, with the tanks right behind you.

1,000 yen for a liter!? Being able to drink authentic, British-trained ale at that price would make me a regular.
