Tenants Brewing is based in Fuchu, but it’s a pretty unusual brewery. In fact, it doesn’t even have its own brewery.

What? A brewery without a brewery? How does that work?
Hop Bro
It’s a so-called "phantom brewery," and they brew beer using the facilities of Japan Beer Brewing in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture. The concept that representative Hiroaki Homma and business planning lead Tomohiko Tsukigata champion is "designing beer."
Mugi
Designing beer? What do you mean?
Hop Bro
Tsukigata’s idea is pretty unique. In fashion and architecture, the designer and the maker are separate, right? The same idea applies to beer: the "ability to define the concept" and "the skill to make it" are different things. You design the recipe, and the brewer turns it into reality.
Mugi
Whoa! So it’s like having a fashion designer in the beer world? That’s interesting!
Hop Bro
And they only make IPA, which is refreshingly decisive. Homma and Tsukigata bonded over their love of IPA, and their mission is to "free people from the risk of fixed ideas." Their signature beer, "I'm G," is a Black IPA, and "The Fourth Dimension" is a Session IPA.
Mugi
IPA only! They really commit to it, huh? Black IPA is pretty rare, so that makes me curious.
Hop Bro
On Untappd, you’ll find a lineup of boldly named IPAs like Smokin' Demension, Peak 245, and Theta. They also have a directly operated shop in Fuchu, so you can try them all there.
Mugi
That sounds like heaven for IPA lovers. The freedom that comes from not owning a brewery is new and exciting too! I want to go!
