Hakodate Beer

Hakodate Beer opened in December 1996, making it the original local beer of Hakodate. In fact, its producer, Marukatsu Kosan, was originally a seafood company.

They drew up high-quality natural groundwater pumped up from the foot of Mount Hakodate, and as a business that could make use of that water, they entered beer brewing. They are committed to 100% malt and use no adjuncts at all.

The four standard beers each have their own character. Goryo no Hoshi is a weizen with more than 50% wheat malt, offering a fruity aroma and a soft mouthfeel. Meijikan is an alt with a reddish-copper color and a mellow taste with hop bitterness. Kita no Ippo is an English ale with gentle sweetness and a satisfying body. Kolsch is pale and exceptionally crisp.

Exactly, all of the brand names are inspired by Hakodate. And one that stands out is the strong ale called "The Beer the President Often Drinks." It uses twice the usual amount of malt, is aged for one month, and has an alcohol content of about 10%.

The building is great too. It's made of red brick and has a symbolic grand staircase, and it lights up at night. The first floor has a shop, brewery, and restaurant, so you can dine while looking at the brewing tanks. It's also a popular sightseeing spot in Hakodate's bay area.

As Hakodate's only brewpub, it offers freshly brewed beer you can only drink here. You can also take home 330 ml bottles as souvenirs, so it's a must-visit spot when sightseeing in Hakodate.
