There’s another brewery in Tendo, too. It’s called "Brewlab.108," and it’s a microbrewery that opened inside Shogi Mura Tendo Tower in 2020.
Mugi
What’s the number 108 about? Enlightenment?
Hop Bro
Exactly. It refers to the 108 earthly desires, meaning they want to brew 108 kinds of beer with new flavors. But that’s not all: it also carries three meanings, including an homage to Tohachi, the Nakameguro izakaya founder Kato liked, and the couple’s wedding anniversary on October 8.
Mugi
Even the wedding anniversary! What is this, too romantic...
Hop Bro
And it’s seriously impressive, too. In the year it opened, 2020, it won a double category championship at the International Beer Cup, taking both the sake yeast division and the Japan Origin division.
Mugi
Wait, it won two international awards right after opening!?
Hop Bro
Yeah. It uses Yamagata Prefecture fruits and specialty products as adjuncts extensively, and "#069 Iitomiki ~Rising Sun~" uses sake lees, while "#074 La France ~Midagunashi~" uses La France pears. There are also cherry, tomato, and quince beers.
Mugi
The numbered labels are cool! So every beer has a number.
Hop Bro
Right, each recipe gets a serial number, so it’s fun to track how far they’ve gotten. Since it’s small-scale, the experimental spirit really stands out. It feels like they’re always thinking about the next move in Tendo, the town of shogi.
Mugi
I’d want to collect all 108 varieties! I want to go to the Shogi Tower too!
