An autumn classic returns

Tiels Brewing, a brewery based in Mishima, Shizuoka, has announced the return of its seasonal Märzen lager. According to the brewery, this year’s version showcases the amber color associated with autumn, along with toasted malt aromas and a rounded sweetness.

Märzen is a lager style historically enjoyed at Oktoberfest. While it retains the clean, refreshing qualities of lager, it also highlights rich malt flavor and a fuller body. Tiels Brewing says it allowed the beer ample time to mature after fermentation, resulting in a bright, malt-forward lager with a polished finish.

A beer for lingering over

The beer combines toasted malt notes, restrained sweetness, and a gentle depth of flavor. Its relatively high alcohol content makes it less of a quick, light refreshment and more suited to sipping slowly and appreciating its changing layers.

Tiels Brewing operates a small brewery and taproom beside the Genbei River in Mishima. Guests can enjoy freshly made beers while looking into the brewing area, with more than 10 original beers generally available. The taproom also offers tasting sets featuring three selected beers, as well as food such as fish and chips and dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients from the Izu region.

The brewery recommends enjoying the Märzen lager during a quiet autumn evening, perhaps with a book in hand. For visitors to Mishima, it offers an opportunity to experience the season through the color, aroma, and malt richness of a carefully matured lager.
