Saien Micro Brewery unveils Woody Stout made with cherry chips
Saien Micro Brewery with Kitchen in Morioka announced a new stout called Woody Stout on Instagram. The beer uses Iwate-grown cherry chips and is described as combining roasty malt character with a gentle woody aroma and a vanilla-like finish.
Saien Micro Brewery with Kitchen is a pub brewery in Morioka, Iwate, developed by Baeren Brewery. The venue was renovated from the former Cucinna restaurant and is positioned as the first microbrewery in downtown Morioka. Its tap list includes Baeren classics as well as beers brewed on site, with eight taps available.
In its Instagram post, the brewery introduced a new stout called Woody Stout. According to the post, the beer is built around cherry chips sourced in the prefecture. The chips were developed through joint research between a smoked-chip maker in Yamada Town and the prefectural industrial technology center for use in alcoholic infusions, then steeped for about three weeks. That process adds a subtle wood note and a soft vanilla-like aftertaste on top of the stout's roasted malt profile.
The beer is presented as something different from barrel aging, using local ingredients to create a layered and mellow stout. For drinkers looking for a beer with a strong sense of place, Woody Stout stands out as a notable release from a brewery that continues to explore more adventurous styles alongside food-friendly service.
