Peach aromatics with a fresh sansho lift

Minamiaizu Mountain Brewing has introduced “Bokan,” a new Momo Sour Ale with Sansho brewed in collaboration with New Kakan, a Chinese restaurant in Shimokitazawa. The beer has an ABV of 4.0%.

The brew uses Fukushima-grown Akatsuki peaches harvested at Tsuchikko Tajima Farm in Minamiaizu. Locally gathered sansho pepper is added in both fruit and leaf form. Whole peaches are added near the end of the brew, while the sansho fruit is crushed and also steeped after fermentation to bring out a citrus-like character beneath the peach.

Wheat and oats contribute to a lightly hazy appearance and a fuller texture than the beer’s easy-drinking strength might suggest. The aroma is dominated by peach, with a refreshing, mint-like lift from fresh sansho. On the palate, acidity arrives first, followed by peach, lemon-like citrus, and a gentle sansho finish.

The beer’s restrained bitterness and subtle peppery heat make it suitable for the table. It should work well with cheese and salads, as well as spicy dishes and foods with a touch of heat. At Minamiaizu Mountain Brewing / Taproom BeerFridge in Tajima, visitors can experience a beer that brings together local ingredients, a regional brewery, and ideas from a restaurant kitchen.

Available sizes are 15.5 L, 10.2 L, and 350 ml. The keg version is conventionally carbonated, while the canned version is finished with bottle- or can-conditioning inside the package.
