A pumpkin ale rooted in Kamifurano

Susukino Yell Stand is serving kampoca 2026, an Imperial Pumpkin Ale from Hokkaido’s Hop Kotan Brewing. The beer is listed at 8.0% ABV and 15 IBU, giving it a rich, full-bodied profile while keeping bitterness relatively restrained.

The brew uses pumpkin grown in Kamifurano, Hokkaido. More than 100 kilograms of pumpkin are processed by hand for an entire day before brewing, then added during the mash and wort-production process. That labor-intensive approach reflects Hop Kotan’s focus on local ingredients and seasonal brewing.

Inspired by pumpkin pie

The recipe takes inspiration from pumpkin pie. Supporting ingredients and spices are used to complement the sweetness that yeast consumes during fermentation, including the roasted character of brown sugar and cinnamon. For the 2026 release, the spice level has been kept to a minimum so the pumpkin’s gentle, natural sweetness can come forward.

At 8.0% ABV, kampoca 2026 offers depth and a rich drinking experience suited to slow sipping. Its moderate bitterness keeps the beer from becoming overly heavy. It can be enjoyed on its own, allowing the pumpkin and spice notes to develop as the beer warms.

Pairing ideas for autumn

Hop Kotan Brewing recommends pairing the beer with bittersweet caramel pudding, gateau chocolat, chicken meat pie, or beef stew. Desserts can echo the beer’s brown sugar and spice tones, while hearty dishes should work well with its higher alcohol and rich body.
