At RepuBrew Mishima Slider House 24taps in Mishima, Shizuoka, beer fans can find Repubrew's distinctive 'Barrel Fermentation Oats Milk Latte With Nutella.'

A beer built like an over-customized cafe drink

The concept turns the feeling of endlessly adding extras to a coffee order into a craft beer. The base is a pale ale brewed with generous amounts of wheat and oats, then rounded out with lactose for creaminess, Nutella for sweet nutty notes, and coffee for a layered roast aroma.

The beer is fermented in oak barrels that previously held whiskey, and coffee beans from Numazu's Chattra Coffee are steeped directly into the beer after fermentation to pull out aroma in a cold-brew-like way. The nitro version adds a cappuccino-like, ultra-fine foam that gives the beer a dessert-drink impression before the first sip.

What to expect in the glass

Repubrew's tasting notes describe a slightly hazy pale gold pour, a coffee-and-Nutella aroma, and a soft, drinkable body with very little bitterness. Oats give it a rich, silky texture, while carbonation keeps the finish clean enough to make another sip easy.

Food pairings lean toward chocolate, cheesecake, blue cheese, and other dishes with sweetness or richness. In a beer pub like 24taps, this is the kind of beer that rewards slow drinking, with the aroma opening up as it warms in the glass.
