Hiwasa Beer, based in Minami, Tokushima, has published an Instagram post titled “Introducing the appeal of Shikoku’s eastern edge.” The post focuses on the Hiwasa area in southeastern Shikoku and offers visitors a reason to explore the town and its surrounding landscape.
Hiwasa is a nature-rich community where the mountains meet the sea. Its attractions include Ohama Beach, known as a nesting site for loggerhead turtles, Yakuoji Temple—the 23rd temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route—and the historic streets of Hiwasa. Visitors can combine coastal sightseeing with a walk through the temple town and a stop at Roadside Station Hiwasa.
Hiwasa Beer brews in a part of Tannya, a former shipping merchant’s house listed as a registered tangible cultural property. The brewery uses ingredients connected to the region, including underground seawater from Hiwasa and Awa Bancha, a fermented tea from Tokushima. These local elements give its beers a clear sense of place, from refreshing, ocean-inspired expressions to beers with the distinctive character of Awa Bancha.
Founder Ami Kumagai moved to Hiwasa after being drawn to its scenery. Following work as a community revitalization coordinator, she opened the brewery and has continued to share Minami’s appeal through brewing, label design, sales, and event appearances.
For travelers visiting Shikoku’s eastern edge, exploring the coastline and historic streets before enjoying a local beer offers a natural way to experience the area. Check Hiwasa Beer’s official Instagram for current information on opening days, sales locations, and events.
