HOP MAN, a beer pub in Tenmangusa, Chigasaki, Kanagawa, has tapped Shonan Beer’s Helles. The bar is known for serving around 30 rotating draft craft beers a day, along with an in-house bottle shop, so the new lager adds a calmer, food-friendly option to an already broad selection.

This Helles is a revival of the style first brewed by Shonan Beer in 1996. Since a 25th-anniversary revival in 2021, it has reportedly been brewed about once a year. The beer is made with pilsner malt and a small amount of Carahell malt, and it recreates a traditional decoction method. Czech Saaz hops and lager yeast are used for a cool, slow fermentation, resulting in aromas reminiscent of fresh bread, crisp malt sweetness, and a soft bitterness.

As a classic Southern German lager, Helles is bright in color and easy to drink. It works well as a first pour and also alongside food, making it a natural fit for HOP MAN’s tap-heavy lineup. For beer drinkers looking for a more restrained but well-made option in Chigasaki, this is one to notice.
