A Day to Learn About Coastal Plants

On Sunday, June 7, "Shonan Hamabofu Festival 2026" will be held at the Tsujido Civic Center in Fujisawa City. The theme is "A day to learn about, savor, and protect the life of the shore." It is an event that introduces the ecology of the coastal plant hamabofu and local environmental conservation efforts.

Part 1 runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with exhibits, sales, and hands-on activities. The exhibits let visitors learn about hamabofu ecology and conservation efforts, while the sales corner explains that hamabofu has also been used in unexpected foods such as udon and beer. In addition to coloring activities and crafts, a Tsujido Beach nature walk, available by advance registration, is also planned.

Lectures Also Planned

From 1:30 p.m., the second part will feature lectures. Activities by local groups working on conservation and promotion, such as the Shonan Coast Plant Cultivation Association and the Shonan Hamabofu Project, will be introduced. The program is designed to connect the idea of protecting coastal nature with local everyday life and food culture.

Notable from a Local Brewery Perspective

The venue is also a familiar area for Ora Brewing, based in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. In the world of craft beer, one of the attractions is how to make use of local plants and ingredients. Opportunities to encounter materials like hamabofu, which link seaside environments with food, are also interesting for beer fans.

The event is free to attend, and some activities require advance registration. It looks like it will be a day to learn about the natural world along the Shonan coast while tracing the stories behind food and beer.
