R_BREWERY Self Shares the Origin of Its “Beer for Every Milestone” Idea
Shiga-based hands-on brewery R_BREWERY Self has explained the meaning behind its phrase “beer for every milestone.” The idea traces back to a wheat weissbier the founder drank at a hotel bar in Germany around 2006.
R_BREWERY Self is a hands-on craft brewery in Ryuo, Gamo District, Shiga Prefecture. Located on the grounds of Gamono no Yu, it offers an experience where guests can brew beer themselves, while the brewery’s official site says it aims to create many moments of joy through the beer it serves.
The phrase “beer for every milestone” captures that philosophy well. According to the brewery’s official article, the founder visited Germany around 2006 and, after work, ordered a beer at a hotel bar. What came out was a Franziskaner wheat weissbier, whose banana-like aroma left a strong impression and sparked a lasting interest in beer.
What had once been a routine drink became, in hindsight, a milestone that led to the current brewery business. R_BREWERY Self says it wants its beer to be present at the important moments embedded in everyday life, and to remain meaningful even 200 years from now.
Its self-brewing service lets customers make 15 liters of beer. The process includes choosing the beer style, making the wort, leaving fermentation management to the brewery for three weeks, and then bottling or kegging the finished beer. The experience is designed not only around drinking beer, but also around learning and enjoying the brewing process itself.
Sharing a beer you made yourself with family or friends leaves a different kind of memory. R_BREWERY Self’s idea of “beer for every milestone” is a reminder that beer can mark time, place, and personal memories in a way that feels quietly special.
