Quartet Brewing in Karuizawa, Nagano, has reported a beer award in a bilingual Instagram post beginning with “English follows.” The announcement introduces the brewery’s work to beer drinkers in Japan and abroad.

The brewery operates a brewing facility and taproom on Karuizawa’s main street. Founder and CEO Susumu Shiina studied brewing through the KVCC Sustainable Brewing program in Michigan, United States, before co-founding Quartet Brewing with Kayo Shiina in August 2020. The brewery’s name reflects its philosophy that malt, hops, yeast, and water should work together in harmony to create balanced beer.

Its lineup includes Resonance Wheat, an American wheat ale; Quartet IPA, featuring citrus and pineapple-like hop character; and Waltzer Brown Ale, which emphasizes layered malt aroma and sweetness. The range also includes stout, ESB, Bohemian pilsner, and hazy IPA, giving visitors several styles to explore at the Karuizawa taproom.

Several of the brewery’s beers, including Elderflower Ale, Masala Stout, and Sour con Spirito, have previously received recognition in beer competitions. Their approach focuses on drawing distinct character from carefully considered combinations of ingredients. This latest award announcement adds another chapter to Quartet Brewing’s continuing effort to bring expressive, small-batch beer to Karuizawa.
