Shiga Kogen Beer Releases Barrel-Aged Yama-Bushi red in a 500ml Can
Shiga Kogen Beer has released a 500ml canned version of Yama-Bushi red, marking the first time the barrel-aged sour ale has been offered in a can. The new format brings its layered character and gentle acidity to a wider range of drinking occasions.
Shiga Kogen Beer, a brewery based in Yamanouchi, Nagano, has released Yama-Bushi red 500ml Can, product No. 489. It is the first canned release of Yama-Bushi / red, a beer traditionally associated with bottle releases and extended barrel aging.
Yama-Bushi red is a barrel-aged sour ale with a profile that recalls the Flemish red tradition. Its acidity is noticeable but relatively restrained, while fermentation, microorganisms and oak aging contribute layers of aroma and flavor. The beer can show a soft, sweet impression at first, yet finishes dry and refreshing.
Previous descriptions of red have highlighted a red-wine-like character and grape-like nuances, despite the beer being made without fruit. As it warms in the glass, its aroma and flavor develop further, making it a beer to enjoy slowly rather than drink in a hurry. Its dry acidity and wine-inspired profile should work well with meat dishes, cheese and other savory foods.
玉村本店, the brewery’s parent company, notes that there is something unusual about pouring such a complex barrel-aged beer from a can, but says this batch is particularly promising. The 500ml format also makes the beer easier to share, transport and serve in a relaxed setting.
Shiga Kogen Beer produces a broad range of beers in Yamanouchi, from everyday releases and fresh-hop beers to long-aged Yama-Bushi creations. The Yama-Bushi series explores beer as a drink for the table, occupying a space somewhere between craft beer and wine. This new canned red should appeal not only to sour-beer enthusiasts, but also to drinkers who enjoy acidic wines and mature, food-friendly beverages.
