OHLOY Brewing releases Karla at OHLOY STORE, a 5.0% Köln Style Ale
OHLOY Brewing has introduced Karla, a new 5.0% Köln Style Ale built around a simple recipe using German ingredients. At OHLOY STORE in Takamatsu’s Uchimachi district, the beer fits the brewpub’s relaxed, direct-from-the-brewery atmosphere.
OHLOY Brewing has released Karla, a new beer brewed as a Köln Style Ale. At 5.0% ABV, it takes inspiration from Kölsch, the traditional beer style of Cologne, Germany, while keeping the ingredient list limited to German malt and hops for a clean, straightforward build. The goal is a crisp drink with soft malt character, yeast-driven flavor, and restrained hop presence, finished with the silky texture associated with the style.
The brewer also frames it as a beer for hot weather, describing it as a “good friend” for thirst. It is meant to be easygoing like a lager, but with the gentle fruitiness and smooth finish that make Köln Style beers distinctive.
The label artwork, featuring a sea-and-dog motif, was designed by Kaede Nishihara, with photos by @kondophoto. OHLOY STORE, the brewery’s brewpub in Takamatsu’s Uchimachi district, also serves coffee alongside beer, making it a small but flexible place to stop in. Karla looks like the kind of beer that works well with food, conversation, and the slower pace of a neighborhood taproom.
