On August 28, Zao Brewery announced that it will release an event-only fruit ale made with Yamagata-grown passion fruit on September 21 (Mon, national holiday). According to the post, the brewery uses passion fruit grown without agricultural chemicals, carefully strains only the juice, and blends it into the wort.

The brewery says it is aiming for a beer with a sweet-tart profile and a bright, floral aroma. Zao Brewery is based in Yamagata City and is known for brewing with Zao spring water and local ingredients. Its adjacent restaurant, Crang Dining, also serves dishes built around regional produce.

The beer will be introduced at the “ZAO BREWERY Autumn Beer Festival 2026,” scheduled for September 21 and 22 at the event plaza of Yamagin Kenmin Hall. The festival runs from 11:00 to 20:00 on both days. For beer fans, it is a seasonal release that connects local agriculture, brewing, and a live event format.

The release also fits the brewery’s broader mission: to rediscover and share the appeal of Yamagata and Zao through craft beer.
