A once-a-year strawberry beer

TIELS Brewing, which operates the brewery-side taproom TIELS TEA & TAPS by the Genbei River in Mishima, Shizuoka, has finished a new seasonal beer: Strawberry Sour Wheat. On its official site, the brewery describes it as a beer that can only be brewed at this time of year, just as strawberry season comes to a close.

The beer is made with Benihoppe strawberries from Isonoen SOLARA in Izu Nirayama. According to the brewery, the berries are washed, hulled, turned into puree, and added to the fermentation tank one by one. That careful process is meant to carry the strawberry character all the way into the finished beer.

To keep the fruit in the foreground, the recipe uses little hop character and avoids strongly aromatic malts. Instead, TIELS built the beer on a wheat ale base and added a gentle sour profile. The result is a soft mouthfeel, a clean line of acidity, and a strawberry aroma that comes through after the first sip.

Local ingredients are a recurring theme for the brewery. TIELS has previously released beers built with regional citrus, plums, and other local produce, and Strawberry Sour Wheat fits neatly into that lineup. It is available at TIELS TEA & TAPS and will be sold until it runs out.
