Onomichi Brewery will also be open with 8 taps on Friday, April 17. The shop is a brewpub renovated from an old storehouse in Kubo, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and its appeal lies in being able to enjoy beer fresh from the taproom attached to the brewery. It continues to make beer using ingredients from Onomichi, and the lineup is full of strong local character.

The highlight of the day is the spring-only Butterbur Sprout Ale. Made with butterbur sprouts from Mitsugi Town, Onomichi City, it draws out a distinctive earthy aroma and a gentle bitterness, evoking the arrival of spring. In the citrus lineup are Onomichi Ale, made with Onomichi lemon; Lime Gose, which combines Takanejima lime and salt; and Onomichi IPA, made with hassaku citrus. Onomichi Ale won bronze at the Japan Great Beer Awards 2024, and Onomichi IPA also has the distinction of winning bronze in 2026.

If you want to really feel the character of the malt, Shimanami Golden Ale, made with Onomichi-grown mandarin oranges, is easy to appreciate. This is a beer that won silver at the 2024 Japan Great Beer Awards. If you want to change the direction of the aroma, 1894 Hojicha Helles, brewed in collaboration with Imagawa Tamakouen Chaho, or Shironeko Weizen, whose soft wheat-derived character is a hallmark, are also contenders. There is also Onomichi Hard Cider, made with apples from Takano Town, Shobara City, for those looking for a light, brisk drink.

What makes Onomichi Brewery interesting is not just the variety, but the way it straightforwardly turns Onomichi's agricultural and marine products and other nearby ingredients into beer. As a place where you can enjoy the atmosphere of an old storehouse together with the taste of the region, there are plenty of reasons to stop by on April 17 as well. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. On a stroll through Onomichi, it's worth trying the taps that catch your eye one by one.
