Natural Roots Studio Announces a Dark Lager Brewed with Cold-Extracted Coffee Beans
Natural Roots Studio in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture has announced a Prague-style dark lager made with cold-extracted coffee beans. Designed to layer coffee bitterness over the aroma of black malt, it is being offered as a black beer for summer.
Brewing Intent
Natural Roots Studio is known as Repubrew's new brewery factory, based in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This new release is a limited coffee beer announced by Natural Roots Studio, and is a beer inspired by Prague-style dark lager.
Flavor Design
At the core of the recipe is a combination of the clean finish of lager yeast and coffee beans roasted locally in Numazu. By infusing coffee flavor into the beer after fermentation using a cold-brew method, it layers the roastiness from black malt with coffee bitterness. In addition, the brewing water was designed to suppress acidity, aiming for a flavor that stays well integrated through the finish.
Natural Roots Studio Character
Repubrew has continued creating beers that are not bound by convention, making use of both its Mishima and Numazu bases. As its development hub, Natural Roots Studio plays the role of translating local ingredients and roasting culture into recipes. This dark lager, too, brings together coffee beans while keeping the body from feeling too heavy, and can be seen as a release that clearly reflects the studio's direction.
Notable Points
The beer pours a deep black, and its aroma layers the fragrance of black malt and coffee. Its defining feature is that it preserves the outline of a black beer while giving it the lightness expected of a lager. Designed to appeal to both coffee lovers and black beer fans, it is worth noting as a new proposal from Natural Roots Studio.
