Sakura Taps Kegs Up Kaau Beer - A Collaborative Dark Lager with Barbaric Works
On March 28, Yokohama beer pub Sakura Taps announced the tap opening of a new beer in a job posting. This time, the beer on tap is "Kaau Beer," a collaboration between Barbaric Works and Kaau. It is the second dark lager designed to pair with mapo tofu, with the rich umami of dark malt pushed even further.
Sakura Taps opened at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. The main point of the post was "We're hiring part-time staff!" but for beer fans, the new beer announced at the same time was the part not to miss.
The beer tapped this time is Kaau Beer / Barbaric Works x Kaau. It is the second collaboration with Kaau, a dark lager brewed to pair with the mapo tofu that is one of the shop's signature dishes. Compared with the previous version, this one strengthens the umami of dark malt even more, resulting in a dark brown pour with the aroma of fragrant roasted malt and a refined richness that keeps the burnt notes in check.
One notable brewing feature is the use of cold steeping, in which the dark malt is extracted with water to bring out the roasted aroma more gently. Even though it has a deep, dark appearance, it goes down light and is highly drinkable. True to the description, it is easy to recommend even to people who "don't like dark beer," and it also suits slow drinking with a meal.
Sakura Taps is a Yokohama beer pub with eight rotating taps each day. Its appeal lies in being able to enjoy craft beer and hand-drip coffee in a calm interior, making it a place you can use whether you want to drink beer on its own or settle in with snacks. On days when a collaboration tap like this one comes in, you can really see both faces of the shop: a craft beer bar for everyday use, and a place with the depth to properly embrace something a little more daring.
It was the kind of beer for people who want to savor a brew whose brewing intent comes through more clearly than any flashy limited-edition appeal.
