Hitachi Beer Brewery (Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture) introduced “NIHACHI 88 COLD IPA” as an OEM beer. According to the post, the style is COLD IPA, with 5.5% ABV, SRM 3, and 40 IBU. The concept is “the ultimate Cold IPA, taking the crispness of rice (88) to the extreme,” and it was designed with grilled meat in mind.
The recipe centers on a grain bill combining pilsner malt and flaked rice, along with Citra and Cascade hops, and the use of red and green sansho pepper as spices. The post describes it as a “COLD IPA made exclusively for grilled meat” and a “drinkable spice,” clearly emphasizing not only the beer’s standalone drinkability but also its compatibility with food.
It is sold at Grill plus in Suehirocho, Hitachi City. Hitachi Beer Brewery is a brewpub restaurant in Bentencho, Hitachi City, with the brewery on the first floor and the restaurant on the second. As a brewery that has long created a place where freshly brewed beer can be enjoyed with meals, this new release also clearly follows the direction of being a beer completed through pairing with food.
In Hitachi’s craft beer scene, product design that makes use of connections with local ingredients and restaurants has been gradually expanding. “NIHACHI 88 COLD IPA” is one beer born from that trend, and one that deserves attention as a drink made with the assumption that it will be enjoyed alongside food.
