Release Overview

In a post from MOKICHI KAMAKURA, it was announced that Shonan Beer’s “Sansho IPA” will be released on June 4. In the spirit of a beer pub, this is a seasonal pour delivered early, and it is a noteworthy IPA with a distinctive sansho pepper character.

Features of Sansho IPA

“Sansho IPA” is an herb-spice ale with an alcohol content of 6.0%, made with malt, hops, and sansho pepper. The hops used are Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe. According to official information, the beer was born out of a collaboration with Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Oregon on the U.S. West Coast.

Two kinds of sansho are used: powdered sansho and leaf sansho. The leaf sansho, harvested by Mr. Otake in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture, is steeped in the whirlpool after the boil to draw out its aroma, while the powdered sansho is added at the dry-hop stage. The beer is designed so that the refreshing aroma of sansho, the bright character of American hops, and the sweetness of malt overlap, giving it a well-balanced profile that does not lean only on bitterness.
