Did you know that a shochu brewery in Makurazaki makes beer from sweet potatoes?
Mugi
Beer made from sweet potatoes!? Not shochu?
Hop Bro
It's called Kedogawa Beer House, and it's run by Satsuma Shuzo, the maker of the famous "Satsuma Shiranami." Right next to the Kedogawa Distillery "Meijigura," they've been brewing sweet potato beer since 1997.

A major shochu maker brewing beer is surprising. What kind of beer is it?
Hop Bro
There are three kinds. "Satsuma GOLD" is an amber-colored happoshu made from Kogane Sengan, a sweet potato specialty of southern Satsuma, and carefully stored and matured with lager yeast. Another interesting point is that it's rich in polyphenols derived from sweet potatoes.
Mugi
Made with the Kogane Sengan used for sweet-potato shochu! The amber color must be beautiful.
Hop Bro
"Satsuma RED" is impressive too: it has a purple beer body with pale pink foam. It's known for its elegant aroma and refreshing taste.
Mugi
A purple beer with pink foam!? I've never seen that!
Hop Bro
"Satsuma BLACK" is a dark beer type, with a toasty bitterness you can enjoy. The real pleasure is tasting the three side by side. The distilling expertise unique to a shochu brewery really comes through.
Mugi
I'd love to try it! Where can I buy it?
Hop Bro
Kedogawa Beer House itself closed in 2024 because the building had aged, but Satsuma GOLD, RED, and BLACK are still sold only in Kyushu, and you can also buy them through Satsuma Shuzo's online store. At the neighboring Meijigura, you can also tour traditional shochu-making.
Mugi
If I can order it online, I'll give it a try! Tasting sweet-potato shochu and sweet potato beer side by side sounds fun!
