In Kanoya on the Osumi Peninsula, there's a brewery run by a hairdresser.

A hairdresser making beer!? What do you mean?
Hop Bro
That's Yamauchi Masahiro from LET IT BEER. Even now, he says, "My main job is still hairdressing." It all started in 2009, when he drank Weizen from Tazawako Beer in Akita and was stunned, thinking, "Does beer this delicious even exist in the world?"

One glass of beer changed his life!

He founded the company in 2014 with friends like Yukimaru Hisanori, and the following year opened the beer pub "Whack a Mole." Since 2020, they've also started brewing their own beer.

What kind of beer do they make?
Hop Bro
Their signature beer is "Rock and Roll IPA." It's a New England IPA style beer bursting with tropical hop aroma. The label design was done by musician Mamoru Watanabe.

Rock and Roll IPA! The name and the label are both so cool!

And on top of that, they play Satsuma biwa music to the fermentation tanks. It's the kind of playful touch that really feels like Yamauchi's style, blending music and beer.
Mugi
Satsuma biwa with beer!? What is that, that's too interesting!
Hop Bro
They also make plenty of beers using local ingredients. "Kinkan Ale" is a fruit beer made with Osumi-grown kinkan oranges called "Oama," and they even have "Mugi Choco Ale," a collaboration with a chocolate factory in Kanoya. Local seniors also help with label application, so it's truly a "neighborhood beer shop."
Mugi
They're nurturing beer together with the whole town! If I go to Kanoya, I definitely want to stop by Whack a Mole!
