Did you know there’s a craft beer brewery in Yufuin, Oita, that was the very first local beer brewery in Kyushu?
Mugi
What, the very first in Kyushu!? Since when has it been around?
Hop Bro
Since 1994. And it’s not just any brewery - it’s an affiliated company launched by the long-established inn Yufuin Sansuikan, founded in 1911. An onsen ryokan starting a beer brewery was probably a pretty bold move at the time.
Mugi
Whoa! A hot-spring inn makes beer? That’s so cool!
Hop Bro
The brewery is on the inn’s grounds, and they use German-made equipment. Following Germany’s Beer Purity Law, they’ve kept making 100% malt beer using only water, malt, hops, and yeast.
Mugi
So nothing unnecessary goes into it, right? What does beer like that taste like?
Hop Bro
Their signature beer is a Weissbier called "Yufu no Hojun." It comes in two versions, a light and a dark one, and the wheat character really comes through. Tasting them side by side is interesting because their personalities are completely different.
Mugi
Yufu no Hojun! Nice name. Do they make anything else?
Hop Bro
They also make an ale and a stout called "Yufu no Kaori," for four varieties in total. Since all of them are 100% malt, the malt flavor comes through strongly.
Mugi
So you can take a hot spring bath and then compare freshly brewed Weissbiers... that sounds perfect!
Hop Bro
That’s exactly what you can do. The restaurant is arranged so you can see the brewing tanks, and you can enjoy freshly brewed beer along with about 50 kinds of buffet dishes. Drinking a Weissbier while looking out at Mount Yufu must be exceptional.
Mugi
You can add a beer tour to a hot-spring trip in Yufuin... I absolutely want to go!
