What kind of brewery is Tonami Beer?
In Tonami, Toyama, there’s a brewery founded by a diner-bar owner who decided to start something new during the COVID shutdown. It’s called "Tonami Beer."
What? He started making beer while his business was closed? That’s incredible drive!
The owner, Mr. Saito, runs the diner bar "MERRY'S CLUB" in front of Tonami Station, and during the period when he couldn’t operate because of COVID, he stepped into brewing as something he could keep doing and keep challenging himself with for the long term.
Wow! He turned a crisis into an opportunity. Tonami is famous for tulips, but does that have anything to do with the beer?
Exactly! The concept behind every beer they make is tulips. Among them, "TULIP RED IPA" is especially impressive: it looks bright red, but they don’t use any coloring at all.
What? Bright red without coloring? How do they get that color?
They use beets. The natural red from the root vegetable creates a vivid tulip-like color. And they use plenty of hops to balance a floral aroma with a pleasant bitterness, so it’s not just the visual impact that stands out.
I’ve never heard of beer getting its color from beets! What other beers do they make?
Their regular lineup includes "HAZY IPA" and "AMERICAN PALE ALE," with about five varieties available year-round. They use groundwater from the Shogawa River system for brewing, and seasonally they also release espresso- and cacao-style beers.
A brewery-bar you can reach in just three minutes on foot from Tonami Station means you can stop by on the way back from the Tulip Fair too!
Exactly. Carrying the banner of being Tonami’s first craft beer, they make beer at a distance where a bar owner can see the faces of the people drinking it. Even the bottle labels are all unified with tulip designs, so they make perfect souvenirs too.
