Nagashima Beer Garden, located inside Nabana no Sato, is a bit of an unusual presence in Mie's craft beer scene. They use equipment from the German brewing equipment manufacturer JACOB CARL and brew under the technical guidance of a German brewmaster.

A German brewmaster? They brought one in from the source? That's seriously committed.

And they are strict about using 100% malt, with no adjuncts at all. The brewing water is underground water from the Kiso River, so the beer has a clean, smooth mouthfeel. Their standard lineup consists of three types: Pilsner, Dunkel, and Weizen. The Pilsner won a gold medal at the Japan Great Beer Awards 2023.
Mugi
A gold medal! If Pilsner got gold, that means it was judged excellent at the most basic level, right?
Hop Bro
Exactly. The Dunkel also won bronze the same year. It has the toasty aroma of roasted malt and a caramel-like sweetness, with a finish that isn't too heavy. The Weizen is a wheat-malt white beer, and you can enjoy banana-like ester aromas and creamy foam.
Mugi
So they only have three regular beers? Do they make limited editions too?
Hop Bro
That's the interesting part. They have a limited beer called "Olive Grace," made with olive leaf powder from olives grown at Nagashima Farm. That one also won bronze at the Japan Great Beer Awards 2024. They also make "Strawberry Grace," using strawberries from their own farm.
Mugi
Olives and strawberries from their own farm!? So Nagashima Resort even has farms.

Another great thing is that in the 400-seat atrium beer hall, you can enjoy freshly brewed beer with Mie specialties like tonteki and spare ribs. It's especially amazing during the illumination season.

Watching the Nabana no Sato illuminations with a gold-medal Pilsner and spare ribs sounds too good to be true. I'm definitely going in winter!
