Did you know Kinshachi Beer actually has roots going back to the Meiji era? The 11th head of the Morita family succeeded in a trial brew called "Mitsuboshi Beer." More than 100 years later, it was revived in 1996 as Morita Kinshachi Beer.

Wait, the Meiji era!? So this family has been brewing beer since that long ago?
Hop Bro
Exactly. And even now, the "Mitsuboshi Beer" brand carries on the three-star name. Their Mitsuboshi Pilsner is especially good too. It is a Bohemian-style beer brewed with Czech Saaz hops, and it won the top prize at the 2018 National Craft Beer Quality Judging Competition.
Mugi
The top prize! Isn't that insanely impressive?
Hop Bro
It really is. And they have won more than 50 awards in total, both in Japan and overseas. That comes from Production Manager Mr. Sugiyama, who checks the condition of each yeast culture one by one under a microscope while managing fermentation.
Mugi
Wow, that's real craftsmanship... But I feel like I've heard Kinshachi makes some unusual beers too.
Hop Bro
You mean the Nagoya Red Miso Lager. It's a dark lager made with actual red miso from Aichi, and the miso's umami layers onto the crispness and bitterness of the base beer. It won gold at the 2019 Japan Great Beer Awards and silver at the 2020 International Beer Cup. The judges recognized it properly.
Mugi
What!? They put miso into beer? I can't even imagine how it tastes... I want to try it!
Hop Bro
Very Nagoya, right? They also use groundwater from the Kiso River system pumped from a well on the brewery grounds in Inuyama as their brewing water, and their IPA is made with three American hop varieties, Cascade, Calypso, and Huell Melon, at a solid 7%. They're great at combining local ingredients with ingredients from around the world.
Mugi
Carrying on a dream from the Meiji era while turning Nagoya's miso culture into beer too means it has both history and playfulness. If I go to Inuyama, I definitely want to stop by!
