Next up is Keika Brewing in Asamushi Onsen, Aomori City. The brewer here is pretty unusual, too.
Mugi
Asamushi Onsen is that hot spring town, right? There’s a brewery there?

And it’s only a two-minute walk from the station. The founder, Mr. Maruyama, actually works as a fireworks artisan.
Mugi
Wait, a fireworks artisan making beer? How did that happen?
Hop Bro
He trained as a brewer at Tono Brewing in Iwate, then became connected to Asamushi Onsen through fireworks festival work and decided to open a brewery here. It seems it took him about a year to get the brewing license.
Mugi
Brewing beer in a place you got to know through fireworks work sounds kind of romantic. What’s the place like?
Hop Bro
It’s a renovated former bank vacancy, and the table seating in the back is actually the old vault room. You can see the brewing equipment from the counter, with eight counter seats and four table seats.
Mugi
Beer in a vault room? That alone makes me want to go!

They have six taps. Their flagship "Keika" is a pale ale at 5.5%, "AICO" is a stout at 5.2%, and "Sim Sim" is a SMaSH IPA at 5.8%. They also make a golden ale called "Zanko." The concept is to brew beer that pairs well with Aomori cuisine.
Mugi
A "Keika" pale ale after a soak in the hot springs sounds amazing, doesn’t it? And the name Keika fits the nighttime atmosphere of a hot spring town perfectly.
Hop Bro
Exactly. What’s great is how they’ve made the combination of hot springs and local beer work here in Asamushi. You can really feel the sensibility of a fireworks artisan brewer.
